2 Simple Ways to Chart Your Cycle With No Fuss and Overwhelm

So last night my 3 year old puked all over my bedding which had me up most of the night doing laundry and caring for a sick child. To say I woke up exhausted is an understatement!

When the alarm went off at 7:30am and I pulled myself from my warm covers, I entered the kitchen with fierce irritation at the world. I caught myself and for a moment, paused and thought to myself did I just shift from my Inner Summer (ovulation) to my Inner Fall (Luteal phase)? It felt like the uprising of my PMS symptoms.

I checked the calendar and in red ink I saw Day 15. So nope, I was definitely in Inner Summer. The reason that this was profound for me in that moment is because without knowing my cycle day I would have approached my rage and impatience with different tactics. If in fact I was in my transition period, I would have informed my husband that I needed to isolate for a day with no extra responsibilities. Essentially saying I am taking a day off and you need to step in as super dad. If it was the Inner Fall rising, this response would have helped me isolate by myself which would have helped me balance my hormonal shift.

BUT....

Because I was still in my Inner Summer and feeling this strong resistance to life, rather than the fun, outgoing flow of ovulation, I knew my inner medicine was not isolation, but that in fact I was sleep deprived and just needed to go back to bed.

The reason this is important is that by knowing my cycle and knowing what my hormones needed to come back into balance is what helped me have more inner awareness, more self-compassion for my feelings and to know my remedy to get back into balance.

My big take away this morning is that cycle charting is so helpful for us to understand our physical and emotional body plus it allows us to navigate the right solution to re-create balance in the system.

So what if you are someone who is not big in tracking your cycle or is not passionate about journaling. Well, here are two simple and quick ways to track your cycle with no pressure and minimal time commitment:

  1. The simplest way is on your first day of bleeding, go to your calendar and write a 1 beside the date. Continue to mark out the days up to 28 or however long your cycle is. This is a great tool to quickly just look each morning to create awareness of where you are at so you can predict your energy level or what self-care you may need if you are feeling off balance. This is how I chart know and how I map out my month (ie. when I will do certain work events, plan play dates, schedule Kate down time)

  2. Another easy way is the 2 word check-in on a cycle wheel. For this method all you do everyday is ask yourself what are two words or phrases that would describe how I am feeling? Then you document that on a cycle wheel. Keep this wheel and compare it to the next month. The cool thing with this method is that you will see patterns that re-occur month after month on the same day. It really will blow your mind to see how predictable you are. So if you are someone who struggles to track your cycle, try one or both of these methods and see if this helps you feel inspired to get to know your body. Our cycle is our super power, so let's learn its language to deepen into the wisdom.
